Prof. Popova Speaks to Turkish Media About Russia-Ukraine Prisoner Swap

Ukraine and Russia have exchanged 95 prisoners of war each. That’s according to officials in both countries. It’s the latest prisoner swap between the two nations in the last seven weeks. Russia’s defence ministry has confirmed the exchange, adding it was brokered by the United Arab Emirates. Maria Popova, associate professor of political science at McGill University, explains to TRT World whether these swaps signal any progress towards reconciliation.

When asked about whether this was a significant move by both sides, Professor Popova noted that over fifty prisoner exchanges had occurred since the war began in February of 2022, and that this signals no further dialogue established between Russia and Ukraine. She further noted that the international community had been largely failing Ukraine, for much of the land that the country had regained from Russia throughout the last two years had been lost to Russian forces.
